Shiare has already gained fame as “the hanging village”, as it is dubbed in several travel guides. It offers unique scenery, with special architecture and preserved traditional culture. Shiare is a remote mountain village south of Kyabobo National Park, located on a steep north-facing slope and surrounded by moist forest. Shiare is one of eight villages of the Akyode tribe, a distinct Guan language group in this area with a total of about 9000 people. Already under German colonial rule the people of Shiare were known for their independent spirit.
Take a taxi or private car to ‘Shiare station’, where the road stops at the foot of the mountain. From here you walk to the village, greeting the people you meet on the way to farm or to Nkwanta and arrive in 45 minutes at Shiare.
